Number 15 will never be worn again on the DePaul Cristo Rey girls basketball team. In a school first, DPCR has retired the basketball jersey of graduating senior Heaven Evans. Evans, a four-year starter for the Bruins, scored 1,364 points during her DPCR career. That was an average of 15 points per game. A four-year varsity player, she never missed a single game.
She was honored at an all-school assembly on May 18 with the surprise announcement that her number has been retired and her jersey framed for display in the school. Tributes from her coaches, teachers and teammates included, “I’ve coached a lot of girls over the years and she’s the epitome of a student athlete,” said Coach Dan Bareswilt.
“She has a spirit like no other; you are beautiful inside and out,” said Athletic Director Lynne Morris.
Assistant Principal Paul Ebert noted her impact as a leader among students. “Your character is irreplaceable. You show others this is how you live life; this is how you never give up.”
