Cincinnati Bell and DPCR’s Partnership “Pays Dividends”
At DePaul Cristo Rey’s February CEO Breakfast and Panel Discussion, Cincinnati Bell Inc. President and CEO Ted Torbeck shared one of his observations as a year-one Partner in the Corporate Work Study Program, “This program has been a morale-booster for the employees of Cincinnati Bell.”
Four DPCR students work at Cincinnati Bell Technology Solutions, three in Human Resources and one, freshman Heather Cook, with Manager Debbie Felix in Accounts Payable. Less than a year into the program, Debbie’s a fan. “Heather is a tremendous help and it’s such a joy to have her around. We keep her really, really busy,” says Debbie. She is pictured here with Heather.
When Steve Smith, director of relationship marketing, learned about the CWSP program, he had two main concerns, “The students wouldn’t perform at a level that would make them valuable to us and we wouldn’t be able to mentor them,” he says. Neither of his concerns has been validated; in fact, he says, “From a financial perspective this has paid dividends for us. All of the students have done an outstanding job, and I couldn’t be more thrilled with the program.”
Heather works at CBTS every Thursday and one Friday a month. Debbie has a to-do list ready and Heather completes a wide variety of tasks including scanning invoices, printing checks, handling mail, validating information on vendors, printing and reading reports, and even making phone calls to get information from vendors.
As a freshman, Heather didn’t know what to expect from her first work experience but has thrived in the supportive atmosphere at CBTS. “I really like the people, they’re very nice to me,” she explains. Heather aspires to a career in medicine and realizes even work in an Accounts Payable department will help her reach that goal. “This job requires attention to details, and that’s also helping me in math class; plus working should help me get into a good college that can see I’m responsible and ready to work,” she explains.
Debbie believes the program is benefitting Heather and CBTS. “We serve tens of thousands of vendors and customers in our department, and Heather’s work is helping to support all six Bell divisions. This program is a win-win for everybody,” she adds.
