With new challenges and more students, DePaul Cristo Rey’s third annual Bruin Academic Bowl was bigger and better than ever. DPCR hosted this academic competition for seventh and eighth grade students on October 23. There were more than 140 participants from nine schools who completed academic challenges around campus as well as a STEM challenge to build the tallest, free-standing tower from spaghetti and marshmallows.

A spirit of generosity flowed through DePaul Cristo Rey’s first Champions of Change Fundraising Luncheon in which almost $80,000 was raised in one hour. The event was led by a dedicated group of table captains, young professionals from around the community who believe in the school’s mission. Each invited guests to learn more about DPCR and pledge support. Those guests heard from Cincinnati Mayor John Cranley, DPCR graduate Deanna Wilson’15, DPCR President Sister Jeanne Bessette and Table Captain Nick Reilly of HORAN.
DPCR’s seventh annual Golf Classic was originally planned for September, but persistent, heavy rains necessitated rescheduling it to October 15. Even that day started chilly with morning rain, but 104 golfers weren’t deterred. Thanks to them and generous sponsors the event raised almost $70,000 for the DePaul Cristo Rey Tuition Assistance Fund.

During a joyful liturgical celebration, longtime volunteer Barbara K. Bennie was honored with the first annual Founders Leadership Award from DePaul Cristo Rey. The award recognizes someone specially connected to DePaul Cristo Rey whose leadership demonstrates the inspiring qualities of St. Vincent de Paul (the school’s namesake) and the school’s founders, the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati. Those qualities are service, charity and a passion for the mission.

Hundreds of Bruin families turned out to make the 2018 DePaul Cristo Rey College Fair a huge success. More than 40 colleges and universities from around the country were represented at the fair which offered students and families a one-stop-shopping opportunity to explore the many varied higher education options open to them.

The DePaul Cristo Rey Class of 2018 is on to college following May 29 commencement exercises at Mount St. Joseph University.
The 65 graduates have raised the bar for the classes to follow. They:
Completed 1150 college applications
Achieved 100% college acceptance
Earned 224 scholarships totaling $10.8 million including six full-tuition, merit-based scholarships.

Celebrating their shared success, seniors and their Corporate Work Study supervisors enjoyed the annual Seniors & Supervisors Appreciation Luncheon held at DePaul Cristo Rey. During this May 4 celebration, school leaders recognized the success of the soon-to-be-graduates and the important role their supervisors have played in leading them to graduation and college-readiness.

The overwhelming generosity of friends, corporate partners and school supporters has led to another brilliantly successful Rey of Light Scholarship Benefit. Led by event chairs Julie and Brian Ross, Rey of Light raised over $645,000 in an evening that included auctions, raffles, cocktails and dinner. A sold-out crowd of more than 460 filled the DPCR Student Center to capacity with the addition of an outside courtyard tent for the cocktail hour.

The You Make A Difference event gives freshmen the opportunity to recognize a teacher, principal or mentor from their past who has made a difference in their lives. The students and their guests reunited this year at the February 1 reception and each nominee was recognized for the impact made on student lives.

The Champions Club at Great American Ball Park served as a fitting venue to recognize and honor the champions of the DePaul Cristo Rey Corporate Work Study Program (CWSP) – Corporate Partners and Sponsors who put Greater Cincinnati’s Future to Work.. Close to 200 representatives of the companies and organizations that participate in the CWSP joined DPCR leaders, Board members and students to celebrate the successes of the program at the November 17 Corporate Partner Leadership Breakfast
DePaul Cristo Rey alumni at colleges and universities across the region are receiving personal visits, care packages and support from Director of Graduate Success Larisa Wright. In the past few months, Ms. Wright has visited Bruin grads at several schools and will continue through the school year. Her fall visits have included Loyola University Chicago, Miami University, Northern Kentucky University, University of Akron, and the University of Cincinnati (Clifton and Blue Ash campuses).

More than 100 seventh and eighth grade students from CISE (Catholic Inner-City Schools Education Fund) schools participated in the second annual Bruin Academic Bowl at DPCR on October 18. The students were divided into teams to complete academic challenges in the areas of English, Mathematics, Religion, Science, and Social Studies. After the morning round in which they moved across the DPCR campus, the teams participated in a “lightning round” with current events questions. Based on overall scores, four teams took trophies back to their schools.

A new location, beautiful day, enthusiastic golfers and volunteers, and generous sponsors all combined to make the sixth annual DePaul Cristo Rey Golf Classic the best one yet. This year’s classic was held on Monday, September 25 at the Western Hills Country Club. DePaul Cristo Rey Board of Directors Member Bart Kohler, president of TAKKT America, chaired the event and was joined by 100 golfers. The Golf Classic raised over $65,000 for the DePaul Cristo Rey Tuition Assistance Fund.

The members of the DePaul Cristo Rey Class of 2018 were recognized in a Senior Commissioning Ceremony as they embark on their last year of high school. During the ceremony, teachers and staff raised their hands to bless senior families for the role they play as champions of their children’s success. Families raised their hands to bless their children and pray for their continued success. Each senior also received a pin from school leaders.

DePaul Cristo Rey has graduated its third class of seniors and sent them out to make a difference in the world. The 59 seniors graduated in a ceremony at Mount St. Joseph University on May 30. Pastor Dr. Bryan Walker told them in his commencement address, “To get to the greater, get things done today; make the right decisions today.”

Students, teachers and staff celebrated yearlong achievements in academics, Corporate Work Study, service and attendance at the end-of-the-year All-School Awards Ceremony. Students were honored for excellence within specific academic areas and on-the-job, as well as for service to the community, transformation as young adults, and perfect attendance. Several seniors received scholarships and awards from outside organizations.Teachers and staff were honored for faith, leadership, service and zeal.

Seniors and Supervisors Celebrate Corporate Work Study Success
In appreciation for “an investment that will last these students their whole lifetime,” DePaul Cristo Rey students and staff celebrated the success of the Corporate Work Study Program at a Seniors & Supervisors Luncheon. Held May 5 at DPCR, it was an opportunity to celebrate and recognize the critical role supervisors have played in students’ success.

A sold-out, generous crowd, unique auction items and a great cause all combined to make the fifth annual Rey of Light Scholarship Benefit for Students an enormous success. Held at DePaul Cristo Rey on April 29, the gala evening is the school’s largest and most significant fundraiser to support financial assistance for students. This year’s event netted more than $630,000 for the DePaul Cristo Rey Scholarship Fund.

In an evening filled with happy reunions, DePaul Cristo Rey freshmen re-connected with past teachers, principals and mentors at the annual You Make A Difference reception. DPCR freshmen were asked to nominate someone who has made a difference in their lives and those individuals were recognized at the February 2 event. The students and their former teachers and mentors enjoyed the chance to re-connect and spend time together.

A group of DePaul Cristo Rey female students became “Women in Medicine” when they participated in a hands-on field trip to The Christ Hospital in Cincinnati. The hospital’s Women in Medicine group of female physicians hosted the DPCR students on Saturday, January 28 to educate the students about the medical field and encourage them to consider health care careers.

DePaul Cristo Rey High School is the only Greater Cincinnati-area school, among seven statewide, to receive the Governor’s School Innovation Award. DPCR was recognized, along with Cristo Rey Columbus and Saint Martin de Porres (Cristo Rey Cleveland), with this award in a ceremony at the Ohio Statehouse on Tuesday, January 24. In recognizing the Cristo Rey schools and other honorees, Ohio Governor John Kasich called the urban education model of college-prep academics and Corporate Work Study, “the coolest thing.”

For the third year in a row DePaul Cristo Rey High School’s senior class has achieved 100 percent college acceptance. Every member of the Class of 2017 has been accepted to at least one college, most have been accepted to multiple schools, and these seniors have already earned $3.8 million in merit-based academic scholarships. The announcement of 100 percent acceptance was made in a pep-rally style celebration on January 17 that included confetti cannons, standing ovations and words of wisdom from English teacher Dr. Manuel Iris.

More than 100 elementary school students used reasoning skills, teamwork and creativity to compete in the first annual Bruin Academic Bowl at DePaul Cristo Rey. The Bruin Academic Bowl was held on October 28 for 7th and 8th grade students from the CISE (Catholic Inner-City Schools Education Fund) schools. The students were divided into small teams to take on and complete academic challenges in the areas of Arts and Literature, History and Geography, Mathematics, Religion, and Science.

Good weather, good golfers and a good cause all combined for a successful DePaul Cristo Rey Golf Classic. This year’s golf outing, the fifth annual, was held on September 16 at Glenview Golf Course and raised over $60,000 for tuition assistance for DPCR students.

With a full freshman class and at-capacity enrollment in all four grades – DePaul Cristo Rey has begun its sixth year as the school that puts “Cincinnati’s Future to Work.” The 2016-17 school year officially started on Wednesday, August 17. DPCR welcomes 105 freshmen this year with a total enrollment of 335 students – its largest to date. These students live in 40 different zip codes around Greater Cincinnati.

Commencement 2016 was a joyous celebration that began with Baccalaureate Mass celebrated by the Most Rev. Joseph Binzer, auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. It was held at Mount St. Joseph University’s Mater Dei Chapel and followed by the commencement ceremony in the university theatre. There were 38 graduates, all of whom have been accepted to college.

More than a hundred of the women and men who daily train, mentor, assist and support students at their Corporate Work Study Program jobs joined DPCR’s graduating seniors for a special luncheon at which they were acknowledged and appreciated for their efforts. The CWSP Supervisors & Seniors Appreciation Luncheon was held at DPCR on May 6.

It’s only February and already DePaul Cristo Rey’s Class of 2016 has hit a milestone – all seniors have been accepted to college! After walking through a tunnel of cheering classmates and teachers into the gymnasium with confetti flying, the seniors were recognized in a pep rally style celebration in front of the entire school.

DePaul Cristo Rey’s first graduates helped cheer both the girls and boys basketball teams to wins during Homecoming Weekend. While DPCR has celebrated Homecoming with its students in the past, this is the first year there are alumni to make it official. Alumni joined students, families and staff for the girls and boys basketball games, and in between games gathered with their former classmates and teachers for a pizza party.

Appreciation and the importance of partnership and opportunity – these were the messages shared with the guests at DePaul Cristo Rey’s annual Corporate Work Study Program CEO Partner Appreciation Breakfast. The breakfast, held December 10 at the school, drew more than 100 leaders and representatives from the companies and organizations that hire DPCR students. Keynote speaker at the event was Johnna Reeder, president and CEO of REDI Cincinnati, the Regional Economic Development Initiative.

In a combined evening of celebration, gratitude and recognition, DePaul Cristo Rey High School dedicated its newest learning space and recognized a select group of honorees as Igniters of Change. The dedication of the new Santen Learning Commons kicked off the celebration on October 8. The Learning Commons was named in honor of Ann and Harry Santen, who provided the generous lead gift for the renovation project. Following the dedication, guests moved to the DPCR Student Center for the Igniters of Change celebration. Linda Holthaus, David Deye, Ruth J. and Robert A. Conway Foundation, and KMK Law, Paul V. Muething, Managing Partner, were honored for helping to set hearts on fire for the school through their exceptional contributions of service and support.

One hundred golfers did more than swing their clubs in hopes of holes-in-one and under-par scores at DPCR’s 4thannual Golf Classic. At Glenview Golf Course on September 11, they helped raise more than $62,000 in tuition assistance for DPCR students. Academic and teaching excellence, service, faith, leadership and attendance were among the measures of success recognized at the end of the 2014-15 academic year. An All-School Awards Ceremony was held at DePaul Cristo Rey on May 29, the last day of school. Seniors, faculty and staff wore their graduation caps and gowns to mark the start of graduation weekend. However, seniors were far from the only ones receiving awards.

The DePaul Cristo Rey Class of 2015 has made history – becoming the first class to graduate from the school. Commencement exercises were held on May 31 at Mount St. Joseph University and attended by more than 1,000 family members, friends, supporters, Board members, Corporate Partners and supervisors. The ceremony included an invocation given by Salutatorian Keion Humphrey ’15 and a valedictory address given by Ruvarashe Mary-Ann Chimusoro ’15. The Rev. John P. Foley, SJ, founder and chair emeritus of the Cristo Rey Network, addressed the class.

DePaul Cristo Rey High School’s 2015 Rey of Light Scholarship Benefit for Students was a brilliant success. In just three years, this annual spring gala has raised more than $1 million for the school’s scholarship fund. This year’s gala was a sell-out with 420 guests in attendance on April 18.

From the ceremonial first pitch thrown by DPCR’s soon-to-be valedictorian through the ninth inning Reds win, DPCR Senior Night with the Cincinnati Reds was a huge hit! Thanks to the generosity of the Reds, the entire senior class was treated to the April 10 game at Great American Ball Park, helping to root the Reds on to a win against the St. Louis Cardinals. The evening kicked off with senior MaryAnn C. throwing out the ceremonial first pitch of the game.

The Bruin Boys Basketball Team is the 2015 OCSAA (Ohio Christian School Athletic Association) southwest regional champion following a down-to-the-wire win in Dayton on Friday, February 20, 2015. It is the first basketball title in DPCR history. The Bruins, seeded number three in the region, bested number one seed East Dayton Christian School (EDC) 41 to 38 on the Dayton team’s home court.
The DePaul Cristo Rey community participated in the nationwide celebration of Catholic Schools Week with activities that included prayer, service and fun. DPCR’s Catholic Schools Week activities included the Bruins Give Back morning of service, an all-school Mass, students versus teachers volleyball and basketball games, participation in the Archdiocese Catholic Schools Week Mass in downtown Cincinnati, and the annual Bruin games to end the week.

The four honorees were recognized for helping to set hearts on fire for the school through their exceptional contributions of service and support. They are: Judy Mae Vann - Spirit of Service Award; Tom Neyer, Sr. - Champion of the Mission Award; St. Xavier Church - Investor in the Future Award; TriHealth Good Samaritan Hospital - Corporate Partner of Excellence Award.

The celebration began with an all-school Mass to mark the upcoming feast day of St. Vincent de Paul, namesake of the school, and ended with the Mayor's address to students.

The members of the DePaul Cristo Rey Class of 2015 were formally commissioned as seniors in a ceremony attended by family, friends and school staff. The Senior Commissioning Night was the first official event this year leading up to DPCR’s first graduation on May 31, 2015.

On the first day of the new academic year, DPCR became a full four-year high school for the first time welcoming its largest freshman class and first senior class. The day began with a prayer service in which representatives of each class and the faculty/staff lit candles to symbolize the light within each one of them.

The DePaul Cristo Rey High School Rey of Light Scholarship Benefit for Students was a stellar success. More than 400 guests joined DPCR staff, students, Board members and volunteers on April 12 to support the school scholarship fund.
The elegant evening included cocktails, dinner, silent auctions, raffles, and an oral auction of 35 unique items and packages including vacations to Mexico, Hawaii and the British Virgin Islands. The evening benefitted the DPCR Scholarship Fund and a paddle raise for scholarships was part of the oral auction allowing bidders to contribute directly to the scholarship fund; the paddle raise alone raised $70,000.

Members of the DePaul Cristo Rey High School Step Team participated in the Xavier University Step Show at the Gallagher Student Center on Saturday, February 9.
The event is hosted annually by Xavier’s African-American fraternities and sororities and the black student association. DePaul Cristo Rey was the only high school team invited to participate.
Stepping is a musical dance tradition that is a common pastime of African-American fraternities and sororities in which they can express their culture, tradition and history by performing rhythmic routines to common beats. While some teams use music as a backdrop, most tell their story using bodies and by creating a beat with their feet, using their hands to initiate rhythm and their tone of voice as the narrator of the story.
The DePaul Cristo Rey community joined students and teachers at the almost 7,000 Catholic schools around the country to celebrate Catholic Schools Week January 27 to February 2. The weeks events included guest presenters, all-school mass, an afternoon of service activities and culminated with Bruin games.
DPCR students spent a Saturday giving back to their community by cleaning up and beautifying an area park and playground.

Representatives from 14 Jesuit colleges and universities from across the country visited the DPCR campus on March 22, 2012. Members of the Class of 2015 had the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about college options.

DPCR Coporate Partners were recognized at a luncheon hosted by staff and students on February 29, 2012. Guests heard from students who shared their experiences through their work study jobs. Evans Nwanko, President/CEO of Megan Construction, served as guest speaker for the event.
